The MS Hug, not the kinda love you want

"An MS hug, which people also refer to as banding or girdling, is a feeling of pressure around the chest or abdomen. The specific feeling is likely to vary from person to person, but it will usually feel similar to having something wrapped tightly around the torso." (https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/320146#what-is-an-ms-hug)

To me, it felt like a leather belt tightly wrapped on the highest notch around my chest/upper rib cage. With each breath, I felt sharp pains and stiffness, like someone was holding the belt and not allowing me to loosen it. I know since we are in a group called the "snowflake disease," not everyone has the same symptoms- even with an MS Hug. I have some stories that say it feels like electric zapping around the chest, or some even have trouble breathing, sparking anxiety. Nothing helps it. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, if you have one on this topic. I tried every single stretch, electric stimulation, ice/heat, anti-inflammatories, and nothing!!!

Some people report no pain but instead feel pressure around their waist, torso, or neck. Others experience a band of tingling or burning in the same area. Sharp, stabbing pain or dull, widespread aching can also be symptoms of an MS hug. You may experience the following sensations during an MS hug:

  • squeezing

  • crushing

  • crawling feelings under the skin

  • hot or cold burning

  • pins and needles

What triggers it?

Heat, stress, and fatigue — all situations in which your body may not be running at 100 percent efficiency — are common triggers for MS symptoms, including the MS hug. An increase in symptoms does not necessarily mean your disease has progressed. You may need to:

  • rest more

  • cool off

  • treat a fever that’s increasing your body temperature

  • find ways to de-stress

Part of managing pain is knowing what causes pain. Talk with your doctor about any triggers you have noticed. (https://www.healthline.com/health/multiple-sclerosis/ms-hug#triggers)

What have you done to help ease your pain from an MS Hug?

Moving forward, I may try to do some meditation or breathwork during the moments of intense squeezing, or maybe using a weighted blanket and my ReLeaf Packs (www.releafpack.com). Let's be open to sharing, and giving assistance to those in need during times of intense pain.
